That is emergence in its plainest form, and it is uncomfortable precisely because it refuses the address-based causality most explanations reach for by habit. We want a cause we can point to. Emergent phenomena withhold that satisfaction by design, since their causal structure is genuinely distributed across interacting parts rather than merely obscured pending better data. CategoryEmergence names the specific moment at which a pattern crosses from being a description of many local interactions into being treated, usefully, as a category in its own right — a jam, a trend, a norm — even though no interaction alone produced it. Systems theory's real contribution is not detecting complexity; it is resisting the reflex to smuggle a single cause back in once the pattern has been named.
