Contemporary knowledge is not primarily weakened by scarcity but by fragmentation: the same phenomenon is divided among disciplines that describe its linguistic, epistemic, spatial, behavioural, technological, ecological, and archival dimensions without necessarily explaining how one dimension becomes another. A planning category, for example, can begin as a word, stabilise as a classification, enter a database, become administrative procedure, reorganise territory, modify access, alter lived experience, and persist as an archival record.

The central object of transdisciplinary research is therefore not the accumulation of perspectives but the passage between them. Categories become infrastructure when distinctions acquire technical and institutional force; objects become operations when their significance is understood through what they modify rather than what they are; form becomes feedback when durability is recognised as recurrent adaptation, maintenance, and repair; evidence becomes public infrastructure when observations pass through records, metadata, publication, citation, retrieval, and decision; and knowledge becomes a field when concepts, references, pedagogies, and archives begin to reproduce one another through time. These transformations establish an operational understanding of transdisciplinarity in which comparison depends on mechanisms rather than resemblance. A building, database, interface, artwork, tree, or policy can be compared only when a precise operation—classification, threshold, feedback, exposure, maintenance, persistence, or redistribution—can be traced across materially different contexts. The method consequently begins with a concrete situation, distinguishes the mechanism at work, traces its transformations across scales and institutions, connects it to established genealogies, tests it against evidence and counter-examples, documents its provenance and limits, and publishes it as a retrievable public object. This framework overlaps with Science and Technology Studies, systems thinking, urban studies, environmental humanities, design research, artistic research, critical theory, and information studies, but its specific contribution lies in organising their insights around operational relations capable of travelling between disciplines without losing analytical precision. Its boundary is pragmatic: transdisciplinary analysis becomes necessary when the transitions among disciplinary regimes are themselves part of the phenomenon requiring explanation. A field therefore emerges neither through declaration nor through vocabulary alone, but when a sufficiently differentiated corpus develops recurring concepts, citable genealogies, testable operations, pedagogical structures, and persistent public infrastructure through which others can enter, criticise, translate, and extend the work. Corpus produces density; vocabulary produces distinction; grammar organises relations; pedagogy makes those relations transmissible; publication and citation expose them to collective scrutiny; infrastructure preserves their recurrence. The strongest evidence of field formation ultimately comes from external use: concepts survive when they can be adopted, contested, modified, taught, and applied beyond the circumstances of their invention. Transdisciplinarity can thus be understood not as the dissolution of disciplines into a universal synthesis, but as an architecture of precise passages between heterogeneous forms of knowledge. Its task is to make those passages observable, testable, teachable, and durable, transforming fragmented expertise into a field capable of generating further inquiry without erasing the differences from which its intelligence arises.
